Community Builder Award Descriptions 2012

CBA of the Year:
Every year, United Way Ottawa honours an exceptional person or organization whose contributions on a volunteer basis have contributed to improving the lives of so many in our community. Community Builder of the Year Award recipients exemplify United Way’s core values in the work they do every day as they consistently give, are never afraid to speak up and always take action on behalf of others.

Ambassador’s Award:
The Ambassador’s Award recognizes a person who shares and exemplifies the values and goals of United Way. Every year, the organization highlights someone who has joined United Way Ottawa in reaching out to partners in the community, and devoted great time and effort to making a difference in our city.

Volunteer of the Year:
Awarded to a person who has gone above and beyond in dedicating time and energy to improving their community, the Volunteer of the Year award is handed out as part of United Way Ottawa’s Community Builder of the Year Awards. The Volunteer of the Year award recognizes someone who has helped make change happen in their community and contributed to building a healthier and stronger city for everyone.

Give:
United Way Ottawa’s Give award honours a person or an organization who best embodies this call to action, one of United Way Ottawa’s three engagement pillars. By giving their time and talents to volunteering, they give back to the community, encourage others to give what they can, and help make our world a better place, one step at a time.

Speak Up:
United Way Ottawa’s Speak Up award recognizes a person or an organization who best embodies this call to action, one of United Way Ottawa’s three engagement pillars. Through advocacy, communication and action through words, they help strengthen our community and encourage colleagues and partners to speak up for change in our city.

Take Action:
United Way Ottawa’s Take Action award recognizes a person or an organization who best exemplifies this call to action, one of our three key engagement pillars. Taking action includes engaging in volunteerism, crafting partnerships, capacity building, and ultimately motivating your colleagues and caring individuals to join in these efforts that help build a stronger, safer, and healthier community for all and make change happen.

Belonging to Community:
United Way Ottawa’s Belonging to Community award recognizes a person or organization who is working to improve conditions for vulnerable people, including seniors, immigrants and people with disabilities, to contribute fully to their communities. United Way applauds the work being done in our city to establish better employment, housing, and independent living supports for individuals who need help most in our community.
Growing Up Great:
United Way Ottawa’s Growing Up Great award recognizes a person or organization who is working to improve conditions for children and youth, so they can succeed in our community. United Way applauds the work being done in our city to ensure that more kids enter school ready to learn, and that vulnerable children and youth have healthy, safe opportunities to learn and grow outside of school hours.

Turning Lives Around:
United Way Ottawa’s Turning Lives Around award recognizes a person or group who is working to treat and battle poverty, mental illness, homelessness, family violence and crime in our city. United Way applauds the work being done in the community in addictions prevention, education and treatment facilities for youth; to provide support and treatment for people and families in crisis; and to decrease and prevent chronic homelessness.
